Money can be made in the stock market when stock prices decline by selling a stock short and buying the stock back at a lower price. In order to do this however a margin account needs to be set-up with your securities broker.

Declining stocks are usually easy to find. Generic stock pick sites, news articles of litigation, and bad financial reports are all good sources of bad news which tend to have an immediate influence on the price of a stock.

The pitfall is in trying to buy back a stock at the lower price. Many investors have sold a stock short and then found they couldn't rebuy the stock at the lower price. Watching the trading volume and anticipating how many shares could reasonably be repurchased is prudent.
